How to Set Up/Modify SPF for Postmark
The following description addresses how to update a Domain Name Service (DNS) record to use SPF with your custom domain in Postmark.
*It is no longer required to include Postmark in your own custom SPF record. The Return-Path domain is now used by receiving email domains to check for SPF alignment. Therefore, emails sent through Postmark will always pass SPF by default—without any action needed from you—because the Return-Path of all emails via Postmark already includes their outbound sending IPs and SPF record.
Moreover, Postmark allows for a custom Return-Path address to be used, which is a designated email address where bounced messages are sent. By customizing a Return-Path, the ability to present customer emails in a more professional manner (i.e., removes the default third-party “on behalf of” designation) is achieved. To create a custom Return-Path address, follow these steps:
1. Add CNAME record to your DNS that points to pm.mtasv.ne
2. Log in to your Postmark account and select Sender Signatures tab
3. Select DNS Settings link on domain you want to add custom Return-Path domain
4. Navigate to “Set up a custom Return-Path” heading and enter alias used in Step 1
How to Set Up/Modify DKIM for Postmark
DKIM is an industry-standard method for associating a domain name to an email so the recipient can validate the legitimacy of the message. You can enable DKIM for your domain from Postmark’s control panel after creating the required TXT record in your domain’s DNS manager. In other words, adding DKIM authentication to outbound emails sent through Postmark requires that you add a DKIM record to your DNS. To set up DKIM for approved senders, follow the below steps:
1. Log in to your Postmark account
2. Navigate to Sender Signatures tab
3. Under domain adding DKIM authentication to, click DNS Settings or Add a DKIM DNS record
4. DKIM record shown needs to be added to your DNS as TXT record
5. Log in to your domain host account and access field to add new DNS records
6. In DNS manager, add new TXT record with Hostname/Value shown in DNS Settings page for domain adding DKIM
7. Save changes
As a user of this outbound email provider, Postmark customers are afforded DKIM signing because it supports that mechanism. By utilizing Postmark’s self-service portal, you can manually set up DKIM at your convenience via TXT records mentioned above. Overall, this Postmark product provides beneficial components (e.g., DKIM signing, custom DKIM records, self-service set up with TXT records) that result in a streamlined process.
