What Is Inbox Placement?

Inbox Placement or Inbox Placement Rate (IPR) refers to the percentage of emails that actually reached recipients' inboxes. Inbox Placement is a critical benchmark in email deliverability, used to meaure the success of an email marketing campaign or when sending out simple transactional messages. Emails that achieve high IPRs avoid the dreaded spam filter and give the sender a higher return on investment (ROI) for those email sends.

Inbox Placement Testing

Inbox Placement Testing is the process by which the Inbox Placement Rate is derived. Emails are sent to a seedlist of email addresses at a variety of different inbox providers. The number of emails that are successfully delivered to those inboxes is then divided by the total volume of messages to derive an overall IPR.

MxToolbox's Inbox Placement feature tests your sent message's deliverability to Gmail and Office 365 inboxes. It tells you whether your message landed in the Spam (Gmail)/Junk (Outlook) folder, the inbox, or another category (e.g., Promotions, Social). Your email's delivery is determined before you click the send button, which lets you take corrective actions if needed.

By integrating with MxToolbox's Inbox Placement feature, you can be proactive against unknown delivery issues and avoid Spam/Junk folders because it alerts you to any problems pre-send. You can also decide if you want to test your email marketing campaign's inbox placement automatically by setting it up post-send in different campaigns or simply run inbox placement tests on draft messages before actually sending.

What Is Inbox Placement Rate?

As mentioned, IPR is the rate of your emails that were delivered to the inbox instead of the Spam/Junk folder. To calculate your IPR, simply divide the number of messages delivered to the inbox by the total number of messages sent.

For example, if you sent an email marketing campaign to 1,000 customers and 750 of those messages were delivered to inboxes, your IPR is: 750/1,000 = 75%.

The lower your IPR, the more deliverability issues your email encounters. This rate is beneficial in combination with other reports when determining the deliverability of your campaigns, so utilize it and MxToolbox's Inbox Placement integration to improve your email performance.
